Hey, those stars look familiar
Most of us have seen our fair share of ‘star porn’ - those iconic astronomy pictures that you see all over the internet, and especially tumblr - but most people probably don’t know that the images undergo a significant amount of processing before they come out looking like the colorful, awe-inspiring photos we know and love. That’s why, depending on how exactly you treat the images - for example, which bands of radiation you highlight - you can get drastically different results, as seen above. This particular image is of the North America nebula - you can see the similarity to the continent, especially in the upper left frame. Check out some of the links below to learn more.
